The Gardens is a beautiful public garden and green space nestled on Texas A&M University's West Campus. Beginning with 27-acres, The Gardens strives to restore, preserve and develop the area and surrounding green space into a variety of themed spaces used for teaching, research, and extension programming, as well as engaging with the community. The first phase of development, seven acres called the Leach Teaching Gardens features 21 themed gardens. Currently, the design team is finalizing its plans for the second phase of development. The Gardens is a unique, vibrant part of campus that allows visitors and students alike to simultaneously enjoy and learn from the nature that surrounds them.

Come out and visit the newly re-dedicated Lou Cash Come out and visit the newly re-dedicated Lou Cashion Memorial Cottage Garden. Recently transplanted to The Gardens in 2021, this plot’s live oak tree was originally planted in 2003 next to the Lou Cashion Memorial Garden of Hensel Park. The bay laurel is also a transplant that originated in Lou Cashion’s home garden which featured roses, lilies, and irises. Grab a selfie with The Pot Man and escape to this quiet refuge that takes inspiration from the traditional English Tudor style gardens that were popular among nobility and everyday people of the time.

We love when The Gardens are used for Aggie studen We love when The Gardens are used for Aggie students to get hands-on learning experiences! In the Spring 2021 semester a landscape was designed by HORT 442 Horticulture Landscape Design II students Allie Becker and Siyuan Zhao. Recently, students from the HORT 425 Landscape Maintenance & Construction lab installed the final design and we must say it looks great!

You can find the new addition to The Gardens near the German and Czech Heritage Gardens between the windmill, stock tank and service road. Have you seen the new vignette? What are your thoughts?

Plants spread their seeds in a lot of different wa Plants spread their seeds in a lot of different ways! Some are transported by the wind; others use nearby bodies of water. Some seed pods even explode, using the energy to throw their seeds far from the parent plant.

However, many plants rely on animals to carry their seeds. Animals that wander close by plants will have seeds hitch hike on their fur thanks to miniature hooks. Other plants produce delicious fruit that animals eat and then...deposit elsewhere.

One of our favorite examples of seed dispersal is the Javan cucumber which uses giant gossamer wings to glide on the wind. If you're a #PlantNerd like us, tell us your favorite seed below!

With its spectacular and fragrant flowers and shad With its spectacular and fragrant flowers and shade tolerance, Mountain Laurel, or Dermatophyllum secundiflorum, is a showy shrub that thrives in shady environments. When you visit The Gardens right now, you'll immediately be greeted by their signature "grape" scent which fills the pathway along the main entrance. Mountain Laurel grows well in USDA zones 5 to 9 but likes to keep its shallow roots cool as temperatures climb, so mulch and watering is important in addition to compost to provide extra nutrients.
